St. John’s Wort has many traditional uses including as a mental health aid and has been featured in many studies which highlight its efficacy as an antidepressant. It has shown the potential to work as well as SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), a popular type of antidepressant prescription doctors will often use to treat depression.
A meta-analysis done in 2017, which included 27 clinical trials with a total of 3808 patients was reviewed, comparing the use of St John’s wort and SSRIs. In patients with depression, St John’s Wort demonstrated comparable response and remission rate, and significantly lower discontinuation/dropout rate compared to standard SSRIs.
St. John’s Wort can be used to help combat a number of other issues such as stress, insomnia, symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood disturbances, neurological pain, and shows promise as a cognitive aid.
